Evaluation of the effects of Aqueous Extract of Parkinsonia aculeata Leaves on Kidney and Liver Function Indices in Albino Rats

Abstract
The reno- and hepatotoxicity of aqueous extract of P. aculeata leaves were evaluated on albino rats. There were no mortality and behavioural changes in the acute toxicity study at single dose of 3.00 g/kg bw for the period of 48 hours. Graded doses of 0.60, 1.20, 1.80 and 2.40 g/kg bw of the extract were then administered orally to groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively, once daily for 28 days. The extract showed no significant effect on the body weights of the animals. ALT activity was significantly (P<0.05) low at the dose of 2.40 g/kg bw, AST and ALP activities were significantly (P<0.05 and P<0.01 respectively) low at doses of 1.80 and 2.40 g/kg bw. The serum total protein and albumin concentrations were significantly (P< 0.05) high at the dose of 2.40 g/kg bw. Serum creatinine concentration was significantly (P<0.01) high at the doses of 1.80 and 2.40 g/kg bw. Whereas serum urea and uric acid levels were significantly (P<0.05 and P<0.01) high at the doses of 1.80 g/kg bw and 2.40 g/kg bw respectively. These results suggest that the aqueous extract of P. aculeata leaves may be non-toxic to the liver but toxic to the kidney and the toxicity is dose-dependent.
