Abstract
This study aimed to demonstrate the effect of honey on the oxidative stress in the brain of sleep-deprived rats. Twenty–five (25) 6-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups to be subjected to sleep deprivation and recovery for 5 days each. Group I (Normal control); Group II: sleep deprivation (SD); Group III: sleep deprivation and recovery (SD+SR); the 3 groups received 10ml/kg distill water orally each; Group IV: sleep deprivation and honey (SD+Honey), Group V: sleep deprivation, recovery with honey (SD+SR+Honey) both groups received honey (1g/kg body weight) orally once daily. There was a significant decrease (P<0.05) in the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), between Group IV and Group V compared with group II. Rats in Group III, Group IV, and Group V showed significant (P<0.05) increase in reduced glutathione (GSH) concentration compared with group II. The activity of brain tissue catalase (CAT) among rats in Group II was significantly lower (P<0.05) than those of rats in Group III, Group IV, and Group V. These results clearly showed that sleep deprivation in rats significantly induces oxidative stress in rats brain tissue and honey has an ameliorative effect on sleep deprived oxidative stress in rats.
